This study investigates the historical and theological origins of the Baptist movement, examining how the context of seventeenth-century English Separatism contributed to the formation of its denominational identity. The research begins with the observation that many members of Baptist churches are unaware of their own historical and doctrinal heritage, which weakens their understanding of the fundamental principles that shape this tradition to this day. Through an analysis of the religious environment of post-Reformation England, marked by tensions between Anglicans, Puritans, and dissenting groups, it becomes evident how the pursuit of doctrinal purity and freedom of conscience paved the way for the emergence of the first Baptist communities, especially through leaders such as John Smyth and Thomas Helwys. The study also addresses the development of the movement in Europe and America. In addition, it presents how Baptist identity is expressed through its confessions of faith and ecclesiological practices, demonstrating doctrinal continuity and a historical commitment to the authority of Scripture. The conclusion is that revisiting this trajectory strengthens contemporary Baptist identity, offering a solid foundation for a conscious, coherent, and historically rooted ecclesial life.
